Summary:
Introduction: Last Night)
John has a recurring dream about a beautiful brunette woman who keeps eluding him, until he is arrested, stripped and publicly shamed, being renamed “John Smith” as punishment.
Chapter 1)
John Smith, a disgraced man living under that shameful name, starts his daily routine of exercise and getting ready for his menial job.
Chapter 2)
John takes the crowded tram to work, insulating himself from the damp seats, and reminisces about his past life of honor before being stripped of his name.
Chapter 3)
John arrives early at the detective agency office, alone as usual, and begins working on documenting an insurance fraud case involving a company called TrafficStar.
Chapter 4)
John uncovers evidence that the insurance claims from TrafficStar were part of a massive fraud scheme involving arson, theft and collusion between the company and an insurance agent named Axelrod, who are cousins. His boss is furious when presented with the evidence against their client.
