We primarily did high-end tubular skylights, attic ventilation, and started doing insulation. We also did some roofing referral business.
Business Aftermath:
This was probably one of my most painful life episodes.
We had our best February on record in 2023, with lots of calls coming in, and then … In March, calls … just … stopped. During those downtimes, we called every single person who ever entered our orbit, and repeatedly heard, ‘Thanks for calling, things are fine. We are not doing any work right now. Call back in two years.’

Lessons:
When things with Houston Daylighting were well and truly wreckage, with no possibility of saving them, I took a Saturday, and I sat down calmly.
I, Douglas A Franklin, made a list of all my mistakes, all the lessons learned, and especially all those things I would do differently in the future. I wrote down everything from ‘how to manage my budgets’, to my ‘advertising methods’, and even into how deeply we would run the business into the future before adding that ‘first employee’.
Since I’m a Charlie Munger and Alex Hormozi fan I took that list and inverted the thinking.
Instead of thinking ‘Let’s do this and then this’, I started thinking ‘If I wanted to kill my business, this is how I would do it using my mistakes and adding all the mistakes I knew to avoid before starting.
That was house ‘How To Kill Your Business‘ was outlined. We will probably finish launching the Spanish language series because that is a lot more fun and currently useful than reopening that Houston Daylighting wound.
The book “Decade in Daylighting” has become a memorial to a now-closed Solatube business called Houston Daylighting. It has been taken over by the manufacturer and they are now running the show.
The products and results were fantastic, but the marketing never clicked. While the business ran successfully for seven years after our winter lull between 2022-2023, leads stopped.
It was a painful and difficult time.
